Fuel loading under way at Fuqing 6

The process of loading the 177 fuel assemblies into the core of unit 6 at the Fuqing nuclear power plant began on 6 November, China National Nuclear Corporation announced. The unit - the second of two demonstration Hualong One reactors at the site in China's Fujian province - is scheduled to begin operations by the end of this year.


Construction of Argentina's CAREM-25 unit to restart

A contract has been signed to complete the main concrete works of Argentina's CAREM-25 small reactor. Henisa Sudamericana will employ up to 250 workers in the work, which is central to the project, according to a government announcement.

The Chinese shipbuilder Wison Heavy Industry will provide the hulls for the Cape Nagloynyn floating nuclear power plant, according to a report by TASS. The rated power of the plant has also dropped since its first announcement.


Canadian long-term waste storage project completed

A project to relocate low-level radioactive waste from historic Canadian radium and uranium refining operations to a new, above-ground long-term storage facility has been completed, with the final layers of topsoil and grass placed on the engineered mound, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories has announced. The capping and closure of the mound at the Port Granby Project Long-Term Waste Management Facility completes a project begun in 2016.


Long-term safety of Armenian plant reviewed by IAEA

An International Atomic Energy Agency team of experts has completed a follow-up Safety Aspects of Long-Term Operation mission to unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant at Metsamor. The team reviewed the improvements in preparedness, organisation and programmes related to long-term operation against the IAEA safety standards.


Nuclear a vital tool in achieving decarbonisation, panel says

Nuclear energy provides enormous opportunities to bring about a fast, cost-effective and just decarbonisation, World Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León said yesterday in a COP26 event titled The Role of Nuclear Energy in a Net-Zero Future. Innovations in technologies - such as small modular reactors - and new ways of financing projects will help nuclear play its role in decarbonising the world, participants said.


Teaming agreement signed for Romanian SMR deployment

NuScale Power and Romanian national nuclear company Nuclearelectrica yesterday signed a teaming agreement to advance the deployment of NuScale's small modular reactor technology in Romania. The signing came a day after plans for the cooperation were announced on the sidelines of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.


Isotope-producing legacy waste disposition project moves to next phase

A two-year effort by Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management and contractor Isotek to process and dispose of a low-dose inventory of uranium-233 stored at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee has been completed. As well as eliminating legacy nuclear material the effort has also provided nuclear isotopes for next-generation cancer treatment research.


IAEA concludes mission to assess Swiss nuclear safety

Switzerland is committed to maintaining and strengthening its regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety, an International Atomic Energy Agency team of experts has concluded. The Integrated Regulatory Review Service mission team said a key challenge for the country is to keep and to build new safety competence for the future by evaluating anticipated gaps in expertise and in identifying actions required to fill them.


Birol calls for nuclear acceleration

Countries have "re-appreciated" the value of nuclear power, International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol said at COP26 today. Birol, who called for new build in Europe, North America and Asia, also said that national commitments made at COP26 would put the world on track to limit global warming to 1.8°C.
